Die Fugger is a popular strategy board game played with customizable pieces. It was first published in 1545 by the Earl of Urach. The two players are said to represent feudal German city-states, Hanau and Nuremberg, who put their trust in the hands of the Fugger family. The board features a grid of 32 squares per player's color arranged around the corners of a central octagon. Various pieces are used on different squares around this area, depending on how they move during game play. Some pieces move along diagonals, while others move along straight lines or even loop back upon themselves to attack other enemy pieces from behind before terminating their turn at one of the four corner squares that act as 'safe havens'. Pieces are used to on certain squares, depending on the type of piece they are. The 13 squares on each side of the central Octagon are safe havens, where pieces cannot be attacked by other pieces or players must retreat there before they are 'killed'. The 12 corners are also safe havens for all pieces, except for the 'Lion' which begins its turn there. A player may not move their piece to a square occupied by an opponent's piece. When a player wishes to attack, they choose any one of their pieces that can move onto an empty square and roll two dice. Each number rolled counts as one movement space. For example, a roll of 4 and 3 means the piece may move 4 spaces from their current position and then another 3 spaces. The player may choose to move their piece as far as possible with the roll of the dice or choose to stop early if they wish to attack a player's piece at any point during that turn. The object of the game is to either occupy one of their opponent's corner squares, or kill every enemy piece on the board without leaving a gap in one's defense or running out of pieces to use. – The Queen is a very valuable piece which moves along straight lines. It may attack any enemy piece that is directly in front of it. The Queen may also be used to defend against enemy pieces that are attacking a square that the Queen is standing on. – The King moves along straight lines and must stay on newly captured squares for one turn before retreating to a safe haven at the end of his turn. If an enemy piece ends its move on any square adjacent to the King, it must stop and retreat one space. – The Lion begins its move from the corner square where all opposing pieces start their turn and can move along straight lines in either direction. A player cannot attack this piece. It is used by the player with the most pieces to defend against opposing pieces in its 'safe haven' square. – The Dragon begins its turn in any one of his safe havens, but may choose to move one space with each roll of the dice either towards or away from his opponent. – The Knight can move along straight lines, does not attack an enemy piece in his safe havens, but may not stop until all six spaces are filled. Additional rules were later created for the game: When a player captures an enemy piece, they must take it back to their edge if they wish to use it again. cfa1e77820
